Ear seeds are one of my favorite simple tools to help extend the benefits of acupuncture between visits. They’re small, comfortable, and easy to wear, and many patients find they offer a little extra support for things like stress, sleep, digestion, cravings, or menstrual cycle–related symptoms.

Below, I’ll walk you through what ear seeds are, how we use them in auricular therapy, and what you can expect if we decide they’re right for you.

What Ear Seeds Are and How They Work

Ear seeds are tiny metal balls or seeds - traditionally from the Vaccaria plant —placed on specific points on the ear with a small adhesive patch. In Chinese medicine, the ear reflects the entire body, so gentle pressure on these points can help regulate the nervous system and complement the work we do on the table. Think of them as a soft extension of acupuncture that continues after you leave the office.

In my practice here in New York, I use ear seeds as part of a broader approach. Whether we’re focusing on stress patterns, sleep disturbances, cravings, digestive support, or menstrual cycle regulation, ear seeds offer a subtle nudge to keep the body moving in the direction we’re aiming for.

What They Feel Like

Most people barely notice them once they’re on. You might feel light pressure when you touch them, but they shouldn’t hurt. Just their presence helps regulate your body, but gentle pressure a few times a day can also keep the points active.

Why I Use Ear Seeds Between Visits

I like ear seeds because they keep the conversation going—your body continues responding to the work we did in session, even if your week gets busy. They can be especially helpful for anxiety, digestion, sleep, or cycle-related symptoms that shift day to day. For patients working on hormonal balance, fertility support, or mood concerns, this gentle continuity can make a noticeable difference.

And because I want these tools to feel accessible, ear seeds are always included at no additional cost when they’re appropriate for your treatment.

What to Expect After They’re Applied

Ear seeds typically stay on for three to five days. You can shower and go about your week as usual. If an ear seed becomes uncomfortable, itchy, or starts to peel, you can remove it right away—comfort always comes first.

Simple Safety and Comfort Notes

There are just a few things to keep in mind:

  • Let me know if you have metal sensitivities so we can choose the right type of seed.
  • Avoid placing earbuds directly over the seeds if they feel tender.
  • If the skin underneath becomes irritated, gently remove the seed.
  • Don’t leave them on longer than a few days, even if they still stick well.

Want to Try Ear Seeds?

If you’re curious about how ear seeds might support your acupuncture treatments, feel free to ask about them during your next visit. You can also book an appointment anytime if you’re new to my practice here in NYC and want to explore acupuncture, ear seeds, or other complementary therapies in a grounded, accessible way.
