The Homeostasis Effect: How Acupuncture Supports Balance Across Body Systems

Homeostasis and Bi-Directional Regulation

Our bodies are constantly working to keep us in a steady, functional state. That built‑in ability to regulate—whether it’s temperature, hormone levels, digestion, or mood—is what we call homeostasis. Even when life feels unpredictable, the body is always nudging itself back toward balance. In my practice here in New York, I often describe homeostasis as the quiet, behind‑the‑scenes job your system does to keep you grounded, responsive, and adaptable.

Of everything I've learned in this medicine, the idea that still amazes me most is this: acupuncture doesn't push your body in one direction. It works in whichever direction your body needs.

 

Western medicine, for the most part, doesn't work that way. A medication lowers something or raises it. Stimulates or suppresses. It has one setting. Acupuncture behaves more like a thermostat than a switch — the same treatment can calm what's overactive and support what's depleted, depending on the state of the person in front of me.

 

Researchers call this bi-directional regulation, and two bodies of research illustrate it beautifully.

 

The nervous system and blood pressure

 A team at the University of California, Irvine spent two decades mapping how acupuncture influences cardiovascular function. Their work shows that acupuncture acts on both the sympathetic ("fight or flight") and parasympathetic ("rest and digest") centers of the brainstem. One of their most striking findings: the very same acupuncture points used to bring down elevated blood pressure can also help correct blood pressure that has dropped too low. Same points. Opposite outcomes. The determining factor is what the body needs.

 

The immune system

 A 2024 review in QJM: An International Journal of Medicine found the same pattern in immune function. The authors point out that the immune drugs available today move in one direction only. They either boost immunity or suppress it, which carries a risk of overshooting either way. Acupuncture, by contrast, appears to regulate immune activity bi-directionally, enhancing immune response where it's underactive and calming it where the immune system has begun attacking the body's own tissue, as in autoimmune conditions.

 

Different systems, same principle: the body is being nudged back toward homeostasis, not overridden.

 

To be clear, this is complementary medicine, not a replacement for your physician or your prescriptions. Much of this research is still at the mechanism and early trial stage. But it explains something I constantly observe in the treatment room. Two patients can receive similar treatments and each move toward their own center.
